A new Dinner Ware/ Table Ware Project

So this is a place setting for four. it includes a plate, a small soup or rice bowl, and a large bowl.  It is an Asian inspired dinner set.

i made it for four place settings but really made five of each to prepare for issues... off the bat I destroyed a small bowl in the throwing...  Here they are as greenware, I did iron oxide design (which turns brown).  It will be glazed in Chun Blue #2.  You can see the design is a bit different on each part of the setting.  The stamp you can see clearly on the slab plate, but this stamp is also on the inside bottom of all the bowls.

Here you can see the stages of creating the slab plates from a slab all the way to greenware with the iron oxide design.

Large bowls drying enough to be able to cut them and move them onto a ware board.  I often do this straight from the wheel, but I wanted to preserve the very round shape in this case.  I don't always care or want to do that with a bowl.

Large bowls trimed, you can see the off center foot I do.

Large bowl, odd man out in terms of shape. So this will be the "extra #5" and I will likely glaze it differently.

Large Pho inspired bowls

Small Rice/Soup bowls

Everything drying so I can bisque!!

A Quick Look at Plates

As a part of the last firing, I did some test glazing to see if a few of the glazes work with slip design.  You can see below it worked out pretty well

Below is Rutile Green, you can see the texture under the glaze but not really the color.

This was Fuzzy White, you can see how it bleeds through pretty well. This works for me.

This is the Chun Blue #2.  You can see blue and green, especially around the white slip.  This also works for me.

Pottery in Motion... the Dinner Set

So the Dinner Set was an early mother's day gift.  It was for us to be able to use today for Easter.  I also brought out some other pottery of mine so we could have enough serving plates.

The Other New Glaze... CHUN

So Chun #2 is a hit!  Below you see it on porcelain.  Then you see it on Speckled Buff.

And here?.... a random unrelated pot.  That is Rutile Green.  Before I used it very thin because I liked the effect... the very effect I get with the Chun #2!

The Dinner Set is... done?

Ok, not really done. I have to make up the missing pieces that died along the way.  In keeping with me breaking things every step... yes I broke a piece that was glazed...

The glaze ran BTW, not a huge deal but good to know. I really really like how this glaze came out.  The pix do not do justice to the glimmer to blue in the thicker sections...

But done and delivered. I am pulling things from home so we have enough plates, and we are ready for Easter.

Possibly a made up solution...

So maybe this is a made up, little kid fantasy solution but...

https://www.etsy.com/your/shops/KickWheelPottery/

maybe I can sell my pots. Maybe it can make enough to actually break even or... give me some extra cash?!

Not sure what else to do honestly.

Adventures in Deadlines...

As is typical... deadlines make it all feel the more stressful when things don't work out.  So that is my wedding ring you see on the plate for size reference.  This is the crack all the way through. The giant platter I was so proud of....

Here is the mad dash to bisque the whole dinner set.  the way we are firing now with electric is aiming to reduce cost. So we fire at night, and on slow.  that means a 12-14 hour fire and a 12 hour cooling... so a bit over 24 hours turn around.  So time is of the essence.  At this point I thought I would be able to make the missing pieces and bisque them separate and glaze but I did the math, no way it will dry in time to fire and come out before Easter.

We don't rush.. because I am clumsy at the best of times.. so I broke this....

I tried to make a bowl replacement and well... decided I was done. To much stress with all the other money issues I have in life.

But I made the glaze. This honey glaze (already listed) and the blue chun are done. So there is that.

Jump forward to today!!  the bisque is done and unloaded.

I had two plates that shit out the bottom... not sure how that happened. This is a new problem to me.  Bleh... so now two more plate deaths.  My dinner set is getting more and more holes in it...

But why stop there?!  Yes we have cracks during firing... on the edge of the bowl. The small bowl had a chip in the lip as well. Not sure how that happened.

Can't really fix any of this at all at this point. I will just have to make the missing pieces and fire on another round of firings. So here is the glaze, a good mix.  It is feeling nice. I hope this fires as advertised!!

Dinnerware set is all glazed. Even with the missing pots I almost totally filled the glaze kiln!

Started with the firing. Given the 12 hours (or more) to fire I don't feel bad starting in the afternoon. So tomorrow late afternoon I can unload. But then I have to instantly load and fire another glaze load for all my pots that are not the dinnerware set... I have to get those out as well....

Almost easter.....

Raku Party

So one of the things our community studio does to help fund the studio and gallery is to rent out the place, and also to have Raku parties.  I helped with a Raku firing today.  As always, I really like doing these firings.  Not such a fan of doing raku work myself, I just like firing for other folks.
